Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a young girl named Alice who falls asleep on a riverbank on a hot summer day. She dreams of falling down a rabbit hole into a fantastical world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, and its narrative course and structure has been enormously influential, especially in fantasy fiction.

The book was first published on 4 July 1865 without illustrations by John Tenniel.Alice was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1804 but she moved to England when she was only three years old. Her father died when she was eight years old and her mother remarried two years later.

During her childhood, Alice had many adventures, both real and imaginary. One of her favourite books was The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, which she read over and over again. She also loved going on picnics and exploring the outdoors.

When Alice was 11 years old, she began attending Mrs. Hayward’s School for Young Ladies in Chelsea. It was here that she met some of her lifelong friends, including Elizabeth Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church college.

On 4 July 1862, Alice, along with her sisters and some friends, went on a boating trip up the River Thames. This is where Dodgson first told them the story that would become Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

A year later, Dodgson expanded the story and sent it to Macmillan publishers who released it under the title Alice’s Adventures Under Ground on 26 November 1864. The first edition featured 42 illustrations by John Tenniel and was an instant success. A second edition was released in December 1865 with 30 new illustrations by Tenniel; this is the version most commonly reprinted today.
